Swine flu preventions tips

Swine Flu. Flash Player 9 is required.

CDC influenza expert, Joseph Bresee, M.D., describes how to recognize the signs and symptoms of swine flu including how swine flu is transmitted, appropriate medicines for treatment and steps to take to prevent or treat illness.

People with swine influenza infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic, and possibly for up to seven days following the illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. However, there are everyday actions that people can take to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

*Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

*Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

*Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

*Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth because germs can spread that way.

Restaurant Horrors!

Many food establishments are concern about how clean they look for their customers. They also spend a lot of time in making their establishment look and feel good. However, they do not always watch what their employees are doing. Here are some of the top five staff errors that could be costing you money and patrons.

1) Waiting staff handling money and food
Many small establishments have small staffs, and the staff is in charge of both handling money and handling food. As a result, your patrons could be watching your staff handling money and with the same dirty hands turn around and handle their food.

2) Food preparation done with dirty hands
One of the worst sins your staff can do, is being seen preparing food after handling money, cleaning the floor, cleaning the counters, etc. Your patrons will have a unsavory taste on their mouths, and may quickly leave your establishment after observing this behavior and never return.

3) Food handling by staff using gloves after handling money
One of the most amusing sins your patrons could see, is one that happens all the time and is seldom noticed except by the most sensitive manager. This happens when your staff is taking the necessary hygienic steps only to spoil the whole process by handling money while wearing the same food service gloves. A patron watching this will cringe... as he or she wonders just how many germs have been transmitted from the money to the glove and then to their food. Depending on the customer, they will either complain, say nothing, or just walk-away. In any case, you just lost a patron.

4) Excessive perfume
Nothing smells more appealing and makes you more hungry than the smell of fresh baked bread or cookies. UHMMM... if one walks into a local bakery and is greeted by this wonderful aroma, one just wants to buy the whole store. However, the opposite is true if you walk to the sand wish shop or bakery and instead you smell the strong smell of obnoxious perfume, or worst the strong body odor of the staff. Here, most of the walk-ins will quickly exit or never return.

5) Sick employee
There is a certain appeal to be attended by a sick employee... NOT! This is a sin that really makes your customers run. Swine flu anyone?

If your staff is guilty of any of these hidden sins... you need to make some major changes in your establishment.

What you should do
1) Set rules for handling food and money
Make sure your staff does not handle both money and food either with their bare hands or with the same gloves.

2) Train your staff to have situational awareness
Make sure your staff is fully aware of what they are doing, how they are doing it, or what they are not doing.

Swine Flu pandemic in winter 2009?

The biggest fear that some in the medical community are expressing comes from the natural flow of flu through out the world. The fear is that come winter; the swine flu virus would have evolved into a stronger more dangerous virus.

Understanding the fear of Swine flu evolution
A scenario painted by some experts of the possible mutation of this swine flu is scary. Here is the scenario painted by some experts.

Birth:
1) Swine flu starts in Mexico, it migrates from Swine to humans. Efforts by Mexican authorities to contain it is successful. A mass infection is avoided.

2) Swine flu travels toward the northern hemisphere. Flu has not evolved strong enough to cause a wide spread pandemic.

Transformation:
3) Swine flu cycles toward the northern hemisphere. As the north's temperature rises during the spring and summer months, the virus slowly travels back toward the now colder southern hemisphere.

4) Swine flu mutates yet again in the southern hemisphere. As temperature rise in the south, and lower in the north, swine flu moves again toward the northern hemisphere. It's now September and the flu beings is journey... now mutated and stronger. This virus could potentially be a real killer.

Can this really happen?
The scenario above is similar to the one taken by this virus's earlier and deadlier cousin; The 1918 flu pandemic. The 1918 Swine flu pandemic was associated with H1N1, and by expert opinion, may reflect a TRANSFORMATION either from swine to humans or from humans to swine. Evidence available from that time suggests that the 1918 outbreak in humans followed a TRANSFORMATION/MUTATION event.

Swine flu teetering on the brink of pandemic

Swine flu cases continue to rise in the U.S and many other countries. So far no vaccine has been created for this swine flu virus. However, the swine flu virus has proven to be susceptible to common anti-virus medications.

Latest reports show 141 Swine flu cases and 1 death in the US. While the concern grows, the situation seems to be stabilizing. While there is no reason to panic, an ad hoc strategy has been emerging for handling this crisis.

The ad hoc Swine Flu Prevention Strategy

1)Protective equipment: Many citizens have decided not to take any chances and are using or stock-piling swine flu protection items such as face masks, gloves, and hand wipes. The intent here has been to prevent the virus from infecting them. This strategy has been used in Mexico to limit and manage the infection rate.

2)Keeping hands clean: The old wisdom of washing one's hands routinely is still favored by many experts as an effective way to keep possible infection from occurring. This is logical; since flu virus can easily be transmitted by an infected person, and surface areas can harbor this virus for a while after the initial exposure.

3)Crowd control: Avoiding close contact with crowds has been an effective way to reduce infection. Mexico, is a prime example; authorities there have manage to reduce the infection rate by limiting public activities and closing public places.

While some municipalities here in the U.S have also taken similar measures, the situation here in the U.S is still nowhere as dangerous as it is in Mexico.

Swine Flu Outbreak - Swine Flu Influenza

A previously unknown strain of swine influenza is a never-before-seen hybrid of viruses from swine, birds and humans. This unknown strain has infecting people in Mexico and the United States and may have potentially killed over 50 people in Mexico.

What is Swine Influenza (Flu)

Swine Flu(Swine Influenza) is a common respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza that is known to cause outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Normally, swine flu viruses do not infect humans, however, human infections have been known to occur when people have close or constant contact with infected animals.

How can you protect yourself

It is advisable that you protect yourself by avoiding contact with infected animals, avoiding eating pork, and keeping yourself protected by wearing face mask, latex gloves and keeping your hands germ free with hand-wipes.
